“A halo of hairspray was glossed on the bathroom door from where my sister used to stand in front of the mirror and spray her bangs. This was the 1980s, when every teenage girl wanted to look like the lead singer of Motley Crue. In her bedroom, my sister had posters of Jon Bon Jovi and Axel Rose taped behind her bedroom door where my mother wouldn’t see them. I often heard the dull thud of ‘80s hair bands coming through our shared bedroom wall. Despite her love of big hair, loud music and posters of shirtless men, my sister inhabited a traditionally feminine girl’s room. Walls the color of a flamingo. Pale bleached wood furniture. Pink wallpaper trim across the top of the room. And delicate sheer pink curtains.” [read more…]
